Meet Jennifer Barbosa of International Supply Partners
Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Barbosa.
Hi Jennifer, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up as a first-generation immigrant from the Cabo Verde Islands, my journey into the world of business and entrepreneurship has been deeply influenced by the legacy of my family. My grandfather was a pioneer in import and export between the islands and the United States, bringing the first Caterpillar machine to Cabo Verde and sponsoring many of our people for visas to America, seeking a better life. My grandmother, equally entrepreneurial, owned a storefront on the first level of their home, embodying the spirit of self-reliance and community service.
Both my parents worked tirelessly in manufacturing plants for most of my life. My father, an industrious man, also ran a cleaning business where my siblings and I spent countless hours cleaning offices, restaurants, and schools. It was in these early experiences that I learned the value of hard work, dedication, and the importance of seizing opportunities.
Inspired by my family’s legacy and their relentless drive, I founded International Supply Partners (ISP) in 2016. Starting a business was not merely a career choice but a continuation of a family tradition rooted in commerce and community building. My goal was to create a company that could support businesses in product development, customization, and identifying the right manufacturers for production, ensuring that quality and efficiency were never compromised.
Today, ISP is a global leader in the supply chain industry, with the capacity to import and export products worldwide. We proudly support a diverse range of industries, including medical, office, janitorial, industrial, and construction materials. Our team of specialists, boasting over 50 years of combined experience, collaborates closely with trade, customs, and logistics experts to ensure timely and cost-efficient delivery of supplies.
Our journey has taken us from small business roots to partnering with some of the largest corporations in the world, including Amazon. This journey has also allowed me to meet and work with government officials and dignitaries globally, expanding our reach and impact.
At the heart of ISP is a commitment to excellence and a dedication to our client’s success. We strive to be more than just a supplier; we aim to be a trusted partner in our client’s growth and development, providing them with the tools and resources they need to thrive.
As I look back on my journey, I am reminded of the values instilled in me by my family: resilience, hard work, and a passion for helping others. These principles continue to guide ISP as we navigate the complexities of global trade and supply chain management, always with an eye toward innovation and improvement.
My story is one of transformation, from a young girl cleaning offices to a business leader meeting with global dignitaries. It’s a testament to the power of perseverance, family heritage, and the belief that no dream is too big when fueled by hard work and determination.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey to where I am today has been anything but smooth. It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions, filled with highs and lows that have tested my resilience and determination in ways I could never have imagined. As a first-generation immigrant from the Cabo Verde Islands, I had big dreams and an unwavering determination to build on my family’s entrepreneurial legacy. But the road was fraught with unexpected challenges.
One of the toughest aspects has been the loss and gain of friendships. The entrepreneurial path can be isolating, and not everyone around you understands or supports your vision. I had to let go of relationships that were no longer aligned with my goals, which was incredibly painful. However, this journey also introduced me to new people who have become invaluable friends and allies, sharing my passion and drive.
Trust issues were another significant hurdle. There were instances where people I trusted betrayed me, stealing tens of thousands of dollars from me and my company. These betrayals were devastating and shook my confidence. Yet, they also taught me the importance of implementing strong checks and balances within my business and being cautious about whom to trust.
Being a black woman in a predominantly white, male-dominated industry has been another significant challenge. I’ve often been told that I don’t belong, and I’ve had to work twice as hard to be taken seriously. These experiences were disheartening and sometimes made me question my path. But they also fueled my determination to succeed and break down barriers for others who face similar prejudices.
The pandemic brought a new set of trials. During this time, I was faced with a tumultuous divorce and mental health struggles, all while being thrown into the chaos of an unprecedented demand for PPE and the disruption of the supply chain. It felt like my world was falling apart from all directions. I didn’t sleep much, trying to juggle the overwhelming stress and adapt to the rapidly changing circumstances. I had to become the sole provider and a single parent once again, managing the household while keeping my business afloat.
In those sleepless nights, I had to find new tactics to cope with the immense pressure. Meditation, late-night walks, and leaning on the few trusted friends and family members became my lifelines. These moments of solitude and support helped me navigate the storm.
Despite these challenges, I never lost sight of my goals. Every obstacle became a lesson in resilience and adaptability. Today, International Supply Partners stands strong, a testament to overcoming adversity and achieving success against the odds. My journey has taught me that while the road may be rough, the destination is worth every struggle. And in the end, it’s the challenges that make the victories so much sweeter.
